Graham police dog retires after eight years on the job – The Times News

GRAHAM — When most officers with the Graham Police Department retire, they are awarded their service weapon for their years of service. When Nero retires later this month, he’ll happily take home his rubber Kong toy.

Nero, 9, has spent his seven-year K-9 career at the Graham Police Department. And in the roughly five years he’s worked with his current handler, K-9 Officer Robert Lovett, Nero has helped recover hundreds of thousands of dollars in drug money, ammunition and illegal substances.

On June 30, Nero will officially retire, but the bond forged between the dog and Lovett won’t be broken. Nero will be released into the care of Lovett and his family, with whom the dog has lived ever since Lovett became Nero’s handler.
